Numerology is the practice of finding meaning in numbers, and in particular the numbers hidden in your date of birth and your name. Of all the numbers a numerologist looks at, the life path number is the one most people start with. It is simple to work out, it never changes, and it gives you a useful lens for thinking about your strengths, habits and the themes that keep turning up in your life.
This guide walks you through the calculation step by step, explains what to do when you reach a master number, gives a short summary of each life path from 1 to 9, and introduces two other core numbers that come from your name.
What is a life path number?
Your life path number is a single digit (or one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33) reduced from your full date of birth. In Western numerology, which is based on the system often credited to Pythagoras, it is seen as the broad theme of your life: the kind of lessons you are drawn to, the way you tend to approach challenges and the qualities you are likely to grow into over time.
It is best thought of as a starting point for reflection rather than a label. Two people with the same number can lead very different lives.
How to calculate your life path number
The most common method reduces the day, the month and the year separately, then adds the three results together. Reducing means adding the digits of a number until you are left with a single digit.
Step-by-step method
- Reduce the day. Add the digits of your day of birth until you reach a single digit.
- Reduce the month. Use the number of the month (January is 1, December is 12) and reduce it the same way.
- Reduce the year. Add all four digits of the year, then keep reducing until you reach a single digit.
- Add the three results and reduce once more to find your life path number.
At every stage, if you reach 11, 22 or 33, stop and keep that number as it is. These are the master numbers, explained below.
A worked example
Take someone born on 14 July 1985.
- Day: 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5
- Month: July is 7
- Year: 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23, and 2 + 3 = 5
- Total: 5 + 7 + 5 = 17, and 1 + 7 = 8
Their life path number is 8.
An example with a master number
Now take someone born on 7 March 1990.
- Day: 7
- Month: March is 3
- Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1
- Total: 7 + 3 + 1 = 11
Because the total is 11, it is not reduced to 2. Their life path number is 11. Some numerologists write this as 11/2, to show that the master number also carries the qualities of the number it would reduce to.
Understanding master numbers 11, 22 and 33
Master numbers are treated as a more intense version of their reduced digit. They are often described as carrying greater potential along with greater pressure, so people with these numbers may feel their life themes more strongly.
- 11 (linked to 2): intuition, sensitivity and inspiring others. The challenge is managing nerves and self-doubt.
- 22 (linked to 4): often called the master builder. Big ideas combined with the practical skill to make them real. The challenge is not being overwhelmed by your own ambitions.
- 33 (linked to 6): compassion, teaching and care for others. The challenge is looking after yourself as well as everyone else.
Methods differ slightly between schools. Some add every digit of the date in one line rather than reducing in three parts, and this can occasionally produce a different result. If you see two answers for the same date, it is usually down to the method, not a mistake.
Life path numbers 1 to 9 in brief
Here is a short summary of each number. Read it as a set of tendencies to consider, not a fixed description of who you are.
- 1 – The initiator: independent, driven and keen to lead. Learning to collaborate is part of the journey.
- 2 – The peacemaker: diplomatic, patient and tuned in to other people. Learning to speak up for yourself matters.
- 3 – The communicator: creative, expressive and sociable. Focus and follow-through bring out the best in this number.
- 4 – The builder: practical, loyal and hard-working. Flexibility helps when plans change.
- 5 – The explorer: curious, adaptable and drawn to freedom and variety. Commitment and balance are recurring themes.
- 6 – The nurturer: caring, responsible and focused on home and community. Healthy boundaries are important.
- 7 – The seeker: thoughtful, analytical and interested in deeper questions. Trusting others can take time.
- 8 – The achiever: ambitious, organised and goal-focused. Balancing work with rest and relationships is key.
- 9 – The humanitarian: generous, idealistic and big-hearted. Letting go of the past is a common lesson.
Your expression number
Your expression number, sometimes called your destiny number, comes from the full name on your birth certificate. It is said to describe your natural talents and the way you present yourself to the world.
Each letter is given a value from 1 to 9 using the Pythagorean chart:
- 1: A, J, S
- 2: B, K, T
- 3: C, L, U
- 4: D, M, V
- 5: E, N, W
- 6: F, O, X
- 7: G, P, Y
- 8: H, Q, Z
- 9: I, R
Add the values of every letter in your full name, then reduce the total in the same way as before, keeping 11, 22 or 33 if they appear. For example, the name EMMA gives 5 + 4 + 4 + 1 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5.
Your soul urge number
The soul urge number, also known as the heart's desire number, uses only the vowels in your full name. It is thought to reflect what you want deep down: your inner motivations, rather than the face you show others.
Using the same chart, add the vowels A, E, I, O and U. The letter Y is sometimes counted as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound, as in "Lynn", so check which approach your source follows. For EMMA, the vowels are E (5) and A (1), giving a soul urge number of 6.
Looking at your life path, expression and soul urge numbers together is often more revealing than any one of them alone. A life path 8 with a soul urge 6, for example, might be ambitious at work while quietly valuing family above everything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my life path number ever change?
No. Because it comes from your date of birth, your life path number stays the same for your whole life. Other numbers, such as a personal year number, change annually.
Should I use my birth name or the name I use now?
Most numerologists use the full name on your birth certificate for your expression and soul urge numbers. Some also look at your current name separately to see how it shapes the way you present yourself today.
Why do some calculators give me a different number?
Different methods add the digits in a different order, and some do not keep master numbers. Reducing the day, month and year separately is the most widely used approach.
Is a master number better than other numbers?
Not better, just more intense. Master numbers are linked to greater potential and greater pressure, and many people with them relate strongly to their reduced digit as well.
Can numerology tell me what will happen in the future?
Numerology is a tool for self-reflection rather than prediction. It can help you think about patterns and choices, but your decisions remain your own.
Numerology, astrology and tarot are interpretive practices intended for reflection and personal insight. They are not guaranteed predictions and are not a substitute for professional financial, legal, medical or psychological advice.
